Student of Jacques - Louis David, Michel - François Damane - Demartrais was a French painter and engraver from Paris. During the Franco-Napoleonic wars, he stayed in Russia where he executed drawings and maps for the tsar. Among his Russian plates, there are the series Costumes et Usages de Russie and the two aquatints Vues des environs de Narva and Vue de la perspective de Nevsky (file n °11504)
Estonian city since the fall of the USSR in 1991, Narva is on the border with Russia. The Narva River flows through this city which still has a part of its fortifications.
