A nice impression signed Toyokuni ga, Izumiya Ichibei (Kansendô), censor's seal kiwame. The Tale of Genji is one of the Japan's most celebrated work of literature. Written by Murasaki Shikibu, a lady-in-waiting in the early eleventh-century imperial court, the tale recounts the amorous escapades of the "Shining Prince" Genji. In the top of the print, one can see a poem from the Chapter Hahakigi.
Sheet: chûban (260 x 190 mm.)
References: proofs are preserved in the British museum of London and in the MFA of Boston.
Condition: tired-out impression : faded colours, small tears in the edges and inside the image.
