Night Scene of Kasuga Shrine (Nara)

Woodcut in colours

Nice impression, signed in the plate lower left, on Japan paper. Published by Unsodo (with his stamp in the left margin).

Kasuga Taisha is Nara's shrine of the Fujiwara, Japan's most powerful family clan during most of the Nara and Heian Periods. Kasuga Taisha is famous for its lanterns, which have been donated by worshipers. Hundreds of bronze lanterns can be found hanging from the buildings, while as many stone lanterns line its approaches. The lanterns are only lit twice a year during two Lantern Festivals, one in early February and one in mid August.

Sheet : ôban (380 x 265 mm.)

Condition: mount-staining in the edges of the sheet. Impression laid on paper. Two small tears skillfully restored in the lower edge. Handwrittings in pencil in the right edge.
